Supporting Projects Helping Rwanda Recover from Genocide
The sixth annual Leg it for Life 5k will be held on August 9, 2009. Net proceeds from the race will support projects helping Rwanda recover from genocide. The race is part of the Playmakers Greater Lansing 2009 Race Series. The Leg it for Life 5K is a trail run beginning and ending at the East Lansing Soccer Complex. The race begins at 9a.m.
Gross proceeds from the previous years' races now exceed $55,000. Special thanks to the participants and the many corporate, municipal and individual sponsors who have contributed to the race's success over the years, either with dollar or in-kind contributions. In addition, nearly 100 student and adult volunteers participate in the planning, organization and/or race day each year.
See you on August 9th!

In the spring of 2004, the five founders of what would become the Leg it for Life 5K met to begin planning a road race. At the time, sisters Dana and Lael Bialek and Anna Grummon were freshmen and Katie Barcy and Meggie Roberts were sophomore members of the East Lansing High School cross country team. The inspiration for their cause came from Oprah Winfrey. The Bialeks had watched an Oprah Christmas special about children affected by AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and suggested the cause to their teammates. The five agreed on the cause and, after some research, chose UNICEF as the agency for their fundraising efforts.
With the support of their parents, coaches, teammates, friends, and a number of generous sponsors, the girls launched the first Leg it for Life race on August 8, 2004. That inaugural race attracted over 160 participants and raised over $8,000 for UNICEF. The 2nd annual Leg it for Life 5K attracted more than 200 runners, volunteers, and sponsors and raised over $13,000. In 2006, Leg it for Life was invited to join the Playmakers Race Series.
